Another thing that struck me, while talking with this sales man (by the way, the reason he gave for why Top and Bottom refrigerators are more efficient than Side By Side’s is because of the relative location of the freezer to the compressor) it reminded me that the refrigerator I had at my last house was a Side By Side model. I’m sure the previous owners bought that type of model because it’s narrower than a French Door type and fit the area better.

Of course that fridge lasted a little over 16 years for me and was still working, in the house, when I moved. And I have no idea when it was bought, because it was thee when I moved in on July of 2001, so there’s a good chance it may have been over 20 years old. Or even more.

Not a bad lifespan for a fridge.
