Daily Comic Journal: July 10, 2022: “A Really Long Distance Request.”
Yeah, for a second there when I heard Kasem’s voice I really did a double take. He was dead… right?
The show itself is interesting, if just to listen to a capsule of what was popular in music for a July in the 1980’s. During the 80’s I was buying a lot of music, on three different formats. Vinyl, cassette and CD. If I decide to tune in to this show, from Sunday to Sunday, I’ll be curious to hear a lot of the music from those days that I still bought popular music. By the middle of the decade I’d transitioned to college radio and I’m pretty sure that much of that music wasn’t making the Top 40.
The Sirius 70s channel runs Casey’s Top 40 shows on Saturdays (maybe their other “decade” channels do too), and I’ll usually catch a portion when I’m out shopping or running errands – the one I heard today was from 1975. What I find interesting is the songs that crept into the top 40, but never really took off. They might trigger a memory of song you haven’t heard in close to 50 years or, more likely, don’t recall ever hearing. Sometimes I don’t even recognize the artist’s name. Of course, you also hear some big hits that are just starting to “climb the chart”, like ZZ Top’s “Tush” or Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz”.
