Daily Comic Journal: April 30, 2017: “I’m No Longer Networking.”
This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. As everyone knows, over the last few decades Television dramas (thanks in part to “The Sopranos”, “Lost”, “Breaking Bad”, “Mad Men”, etc…) no longer are just stand alone episodic shows. The stand alone show (like anything from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s) are a vanishing breed. I’m not saying whether that’s a good thing or not, but it is what the audience wants these days. In order for this presentation to work, the networks airing these shows must have confidence behind their products to show the entire run, despite what the ratings are. If you want your audience to faithful to your show, you’ve got to be faithful to your audience, to air ALL the episodes.
I’ve been had by the networks far too many times during the ’00’s & ’10’s of this Century. Too many shows that I invested time to watch had their plugs pulled prematurely, leaving all unresolved plot lines up in the air. I’m sure I didn’t make a conscience effort to do it, but I found myself ignoring dramatic shows from the four major networks as each new season began. And now, I barely know what they are showing these days. Now I just go to FX, AMC or any of the other cable networks. I know for sure I’ll get at least a full season from these channels.
